Discover the Essence

The ancient town of Almora was in the possession of Katyuri king Baichaldeo before its establishment. He donated a major part of this land to a Gujrati Brahmin, Sri Chand Tiwari. Later, when the Chand kingdom was founded in Baramandal, Kalyan Chand founded the town of Almora at this centrally located place in 1560.

Almora is a wonderful place to convene Almora hill station, Almora currently enjoys the spectacular snowcap of the central Himalayas. Almost every day the tourists can see almost every peak. Almora allows you to enjoy the mighty Himalayas and ridge after ridge of hills. The terraced fields and the stone-slatted barrack-like village houses have so far put up a valiant fight against the encroachments of urban expansion and unplanned development.

Swami Vivekananda Swamiji spent some days in Almora in the course of his Himalayan sojourn. He expressed great eagerness to make an Ashrama in the bosom of the Himalayas for the practice of pure Advaita Vedanta.

Kasar Devi Temple

Kasaar Devi Temple is believed to date back till the 2nd century AD and is dedicated to Kasar Devi. The temple is located at an average elevation of 2,100 meters above sea level and is popular among most hikers as it offers scenic views of the surroundings. The spot itself is situated amidst thick covers of Pine and deodar forests and that is a home to various species of birds.

Katarmal Sun Temple

Located 16 kilometers away from the town of Almora, the Katarmal Sun Temple is the second most important temple dedicated to the Sun god in India. The temple was constructed by the Medieval Katyuri Kings in the 9th century AD. The temple is known for its unique architecture and various carvings on walls and its ceilings. The temple complex consists of one shrine and is surrounded by 45 smaller shrines which are carved out of stone.

Gobind Vallabh Pant Museum

Gobind Vallabh Pant Museum is located at the mall road in Almora and is named after the freedom fighter Gobind Vallabh Pant. The museum contains an impressive collection of ancient items which belong to the medieval dynasties of the Katyuri and the Chand kings who ruled the region. The museum is also famous for its folk paintings and has vast information on the culture and history of Uttarakhand.

Chitai Golu Devta Temple

The famous Temple of Chitai Almora is the Golu Devta Chitai temple, dedicated to Gollu or Goljyu Devta an Avtar (incarnation) of Lord Shiva in the form of Gaur Bhairav. Although there are many temples of Golu Devta in Almora but the Chitai Golu Devta Temple is the most sacred one. It is reputed to make every wish come true, provided the worshipper ask for it with a clear conscience. The temple is situated at 9kms from Almora.

Jageshwar

Jageshwar is situated at an elevation of 1,870 mts above sea level and at a distance of 37 kms from Almora. Jageshwar is an important tourist destination of Kumaon and receives thousands of visitors every year. It is situated amidst dense Deodar forest with a stream flowing at its backyard.
